A couple of Saturday’s ago, my fiancée and me played a made up scenario located in Holland during Operation Market Garden using the Battlegroup overlord ruleset from Ironfist Publishing. The scenario included British Airborne forces (470 pts) holding a town (presumably outskirts around Arnhem) from a German counter attack of mixed armor and infantry (440 pts). The game was a lot of fun, but it was never completed due to time restrictions. However, the battle was significantly favored for the British defender led by Lauren, while my German’s took a beating. The lesson learned is that infantry defenders in a town in hard cover are tough to break and they inflicted too many casualties for the Germans to advance and take the objectives located in the town. The German’s never even breached the out perimeter of the town.
Below are links to the battle lists:
A shot of the board setup and close-up of the town.
some British Defenders guarding the main road armed with PIATs
Some views of the town roads from the east….
Some shots above of the internal town defenses, a 17 pdr, and an MG positioned on a roof top covering the square, while the platoon command squad is positioned behind the brick row houses awaiting the initial probe.
The initial recce probe by the SdKfz. 222 and SdKfz 250/1 is unsuccessful when the 17 pdr easily destroys the armored car.
A couple of glamour shots of the Horsa MKII glider from the initial landing.
The Main elements of the German Forces with the infantry and armor moves in to place to shell the town and it’s defenders before moving in.
…..While the British recce jeep guards the eastern flank from infantry on foot slowly advancing through the fields approaching the town.
The Panzer grenadiers get bogged down under MG fire and take cover in the bushes…..
While the two Wespes run out of ammo… they never really had any impact on the game… next time I must bring a supply truck to keep them in Ammo (each only get three shots before needed to re-supply!
With the German’s taking several casualties and not wanting to risk an all out suicide against the 2 British Platoons, they pack it up and go home to regroup and hopefully bring more artillery and armor into the Frey.
